Our Biomass Turbine
THE ZBP UNIT IS a powerful solution.
Zilkha Biomass Power is dedicated to solving localized energy problems for our customers.
We have developed proprietary technology that powers commercial and industrial facilities using a direct-fired biomass-fueled pressurized gas turbine unit.
Our business plan is to install our energy train at your site and provide reliable, renewable industrial heat and electricity at a competitive price. No capital outlay is required on the part of the customer; Zilkha intends to build, own, and operate the unit.
THE ZBP UNIT IS clean power and heat.
The Zilkha Biomass Unit can generate electrical and thermal energy by burning pellets or residual biomass produced as a byproduct of the wood processing industry. This process is commonly called cogeneration or CHP, which stands for combined heat and power. The unit itself is simple and efficient, composed of a patented pressurized combustor, a cyclonic separator, and a gas turbine. This unit transforms biomass into electricity and process heat at relatively low costs.
THE ZILKHA BIOMASS UNIT IS an on-site utility.
The Zilkha Biomass Unit can be designed in different configurations to produce between 1.5 and 20 megawatts of electrical power, which can be used on-site to serve the specific electrical needs of the host, or sold to a local utility or neighboring facility. We can install multiple units in parallel to serve customers who have larger energy demands.
Distributed power plants like the Zilkha small-footprint units offer advantages that large-scale, capital-intensive central-station power plants cannot provide.
As we move to a smarter grid that allows multiple smaller energy producers to contribute to a region’s energy demand, the Zilkha Biomass Unit provides flexibility to position the plant close to the user and avoid transmission and power distribution losses inherent in grid-dependent systems. Grid independence also opens up alternative site locations for customers looking to build new facilities. This greatly simplifies bringing power to expanding residential and industrial areas.
Because our unit can be configured to yield such varied energy quantities, it is ideal for a broad range of electricity and heat consumers. Our unit also allows people who live in remote, secluded areas to have lower-cost local renewable energy in their backyards. We envision the Zilkha unit serving a variety of consumers who do not have the ability to provide their own fuel, e.g., hospitals, universities, office buildings, and apartment complexes. Zilkha Biomass Power will work with our partners to provide and transport biomass fuel supply as required.
THE ZBP UNIT IS efficiency.
We will build, own, and operate the unit. We will deliver and install it, as well as maintain, service, and upgrade the unit at our own cost.
Delivered in small-footprint, standardized modular components and installed at your site, the Zilkha Biomass Unit:
- Burns biomass byproducts generated by wood-processing operations or wood pellets.
- Can be configured to simultaneously produce electricity and process heat for on-site consumption or sale to a utility, or to produce high-efficiency combined-cycle electricity generation.
- Does not use high capital cost gasification or steam generation.
- Offers substantially higher efficiencies than other burn technologies at low and stable pricing.
- Does not require water for standard operation.
- Has a net CO2 emission loop of zero or less.
- Efficiently consumes certain Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions.
Economic and Environmental Advantages
INDEPENDENCE FROM VOLATILE ENERGY MARKETS: Zilkha Biomass Units use local renewable wood material rather than hydrocarbons for fuel.
INSTALLATION TAILORED TO HOST FACILITY: Zilkha Biomass Units are designed within a size range to match the electrical and thermal requirements of each specific site.
INCREASED EFFICIENCIES: The units achieve high total system efficiencies by producing both electrical and thermal energy.
LOWER-COST ELECTRIC POWER: The net cost of electricity produced by our units is often less than the cost of electricity purchased from a utility company because of high overall conversion efficiency and the elimination of distribution charges from a centralized power plant.
LOWER-COST PROCESS HEAT: Waste heat generated from our units using local fuel will displace the use of natural gas, propane, or fuel oil.
PROVEN COMPONENTS WITH MODULAR PORTABILITY: The Zilkha Biomass Units are composed largely of commercially available components that can be pre-assembled into modules and skid-mounted for delivery to remote locations in a relatively short period of time.
ZERO WASTE WATER: The Zilkha Biomass Unit eliminates concerns related to feed water treatment because the unit is not a conventional steam turbine power system. The Zilkha Biomass Unit does not rely on steam to generate electricity; therefore, it does not require water or any associated piping or water treatment facilities. This may be of particular value in regions where water is in short supply, such as the arid western US and in very cold climates where water-based systems are subject to freezing.
RENEWABLE FUEL: At Zilkha Biomass we are committed to sustainability in everything we do. The fuel we provide for Zilkha Units will be 100% sustainable, sourced from residual wood waste or certified sustainable wood products.
